Work from Home Arrangement in Singapore

"Work from Home" arrangement, as the name implies, is an arrangement between the organization and the employee such that the employee is able to perform his or her job duties at home without having to commute to the office.

Studies on the workplace carried out in the mid-80s predicted that, by now, most white-collar employees would be in "Work from Home" or remote working arrangements in which they worked in locations other than the office. Needless to say, that prediction has not come true and most white-collar employees today don’t make their own schedule.

Why is "Work from Home" Arrangement still not Widely Adopted?

Why is the organizations adopting the "Work from Home" arrangement still low with all the technology available to make working from home faster, more affordable and more effective? In fact, some large organizations pulled their former remote-work employees back into office workspaces despite the high cost of office space.

Allowing white-collar employees to work from home would greatly reduce costs for businesses. However, emotions rather than logic, appears to be at the center of the decision by most businesses to have employees work at the office. Managers’ unwillingness to allow you to work from home is driven by fear of change—specifically, change that would require business leaders and managers to step out of their comfort zone.

To trust his or her teammates to work from home or at a Starbucks, a leader would have to trust them. The policies a leader adopts is the first sign of whether they are fearful. Leaders’ words and actions reveal their fears.

Employers who are not confident that they can hire trustworthy people typically fall back on power mechanisms to control people. These methods include requiring that employees commute daily to work so that their supervisors can physically monitor them. Such policies are aimed at dispelling the leader’s fear.

Many managers say that they need their employees in the office because that’s where teamwork and collaboration happen. However, experienced leaders know that teamwork and collaborations happen organically when employees have the freedom to be themselves, and not when people are forced to work in a given location.

The truth is that fear limits executives in institutions and corporations, making it difficult for them to trust that their employees will work diligently when they’re not under direct supervision. In their minds, employees who work from home do nothing more than watch reality TV shows or and eat pastries all day.

Unjustified lack of trust is a poor reflection on a manager’s or business owner’s leadership skills. In addition to being a disincentive to employees, distrust can also harm relationships with customers, partners and shareholders. Furthermore, the planet stands to benefit greatly from highways clear of heavy traffic caused by working-class commuters.

Benefits of letting people work from home include providing them with an opportunity to improve their work/life balance and allowing them to work in a relaxed environment that is conducive to creativity. Customers stand to gain more from highly motivated staff who are free to explore their creativity.

For this reason, it’s time business owners and managers eased up and allowed their employees to work from home. They can at least start with a pilot project and then scale up the policy. The fearful managerial spirit that prevents leaders from trusting their team ought to be a thing of the past.

If a leader is confident that they painstakingly screened people from a pool of highly talented and motivated candidates, they have no reason not to trust their team to work from home.
