Career Switch or Career Change NOW in Singapore
Career switch, sometimes known as career change, is to give up the current job specialization which one is working as and venture into a new area of job specialization. It frequently requires the re-training to pick up new skills and re-learning of new things in the new job.
A career switch is never an easy thing to do. A lot of time, money and resources were invested in your current one, so it is understandably hard to career switch, however, most of the time it can actually be beneficial.
Make no mistake about it, it is one of the hardest things that you can do, especially when you take into account the current global economy. You will be, more or less, starting all over again, a bit older and a bit wiser than the last time, but you will still have a lot of uncomfortable work ahead of you.
There is a bright side, though, because more often than not, a career switch can offer you an opportunity to excel the way you simply could not do before. Not to mention the fact that you will have certain advantages and experiences that you did not have before.
So, how can you make a career switch work properly?
Preparation for the Career Switch
By far, the worst thing you could do is pick a new career blindly and see where it gets you.
The best thing you can do is sit down and think about what you will want to do. Don't be afraid to talk to experts in different fields, career advisors, and counselors. They will be more than open to these discussions, as well as provide you with a lot of insightful information in regards to the job market and the different fields that you might be interested in.
Once you figure out what field you want to work in, and the paths that are available to you within that field, you will need to get your financial affairs in order. A career switch can be taxing on your personal finances, and in some cases, you might wake up strapped for cash.
What you want to do is start by clearing your debt. Make sure your student loans are paid in full, make sure that all your bills are covered without any of them being past due, and make sure that there is no credit card debt or small loans that still need handling or payments that still need to be made. This is not going to be easy, and this will require you to cut back on a lot of things, but you will eventually manage to stabilize your finances.
Once you’ve cleared your debt, and you have no payments to make other than your utility bills, you can start saving some money. This is because you will need to have a safety net in the long run. Maybe your first job in that field will fail; maybe the career switch will not be a smooth one, so you need to have something to land on.
A good rule of thumb is to save enough money so that you can afford to pay your utility bills, food, and a bit extra, for one year. While this might seem tough to pull off, once you’ve cleared all your debt, the sum will become a lot easier to obtain.
Seek Education and Certification when it comes to Career Change
One of the hardest things with a career switch is going through the educational and training process all over again, however, it is something that is rather unavoidable.
Assuming that you’ve done your research, you already know what courses you need to take, what classes you need to attend, and what certifications you need to obtain in order to get a job in the new field. That being said, you can break down the educational process that you have to go through into 2 halves.
A safe thing to do is keep your old job through the first half of your educational process. This will make paying for the courses a lot easier, as well as help save money and not require you to make financial sacrifices.
The second half, on the other hand, will often be a lot more challenging and a lot more difficult than the first one. You will actually need study time and practice time, and this is where the financial planning comes in. If you’ve saved enough money, you can simply quit your job and focus on your career switch.
While this will give you a lot more time, it will also put you in a rather precarious situation, so make sure that you have the funds for it and that you are sure and confident in the career switch.
Hit the Job Market
Once everything is done, all the certifications are acquired, all the portfolios made, all the studying and learning done, it is time to hit the job market and finish the career switch.
Remember to focus only on the new field that you have trained for, and only apply for jobs that fit your new skill set. Don't be afraid of mentioning your previous career, and all the skills that you've acquired over time, and all the experience that you have.
This is a more uncomfortable place to be in; however, it is only a matter of time until you land a new job in a new field, and successfully complete the career switch.
